At the center of the printed door grid sits a twin-lens dive mask, its corrugated hoses coiled outward against a wreath of fir branches. The hoses read as a two-hose regulator silhouette, closer to the Aqua-Lung that Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan built in France in the winter of 1942-1943 than to a modern single-hose first stage. The medallion holds the middle door positions, so the countdown opens around a face rather than a title, and a hand-lettered line with a drawn heart sits above the grid in the same script as the side panel.
The object carrying all this is a portrait-format rigid gift box that stands upright unsupported, like a small book, printed across the front and the left side. Twenty-four square doors are printed onto the front panel, each one a flap that lifts open onto a recessed compartment lined in plain, unprinted board. Tiny navy numerals sit at the corners of the doors, and pale snowflakes fill the spaces between them in two sizes. In the studio photograph one door stands open at an angle, with the cream board behind it visible.
The left side panel is where the box states its case. A navy double-chevron band runs top to bottom with printed snowflakes set along it, a single large snowflake medallion sits lower down, and two conservation lines are printed in the same navy as the title. On the front, a footer strip names the three families of pieces inside: gear extras, underwater discoveries, divers’ necessities. The palette stays narrow throughout – powder blue, navy, cream and the cobalt of the mask – which keeps a busy panel from looking loud.

The countdown itself is older than the sport. German Lutheran families in the nineteenth century marked chalk lines on a door and rubbed one out each day. This box keeps the subtraction and changes the subject: twenty-four flaps, twenty-four small objects, and a December that ends with a reef and a dive kit laid out along a mantel rather than a pile of packaging.
What sits behind the doors
What comes out is a miniature dive kit and a miniature reef, mixed rather than sorted. The gear group includes a fin keychain, a mask and snorkel, a scuba cylinder, a dive computer, a compass, a carabiner compass, a dive flag on a short pole, a dive boot, dive gloves, an orange reel, a torch, an action camera, an underwater camera and an underwater scooter. The reef group includes a sea turtle, a shark, a clownfish, a manta ray, an octopus, a whale shark, a seahorse, coral clusters and a treasure chest. A soft-sided zip pouch printed with SCUBA SOUL and a small heart is packed as one of the reveals.
None of it is equipment. The pieces are miniatures – scaled props with painted or molded detail, a glossy face on the dive computer and the camera, painted figures that read as molded resin – and not one of them is intended for the water. The hoses on the box are artwork, not a breathing set. Read as a set, the kit follows an open-water course: mask and snorkel, boot, gloves, computer, compass, flag. The animals and coral recall what is worth looking at once the skills are signed off.

That course order is easy to date. PADI publishes its entry levels against ISO standards, with ISO 24801-1 Scuba Diver and ISO 24801-2 Open Water Diver as the first two rungs, and most of the daily pieces are objects a new diver has already handled. The conservation lines on the side panel point at the same etiquette: dive with a buddy, ascend slowly and make a safety stop, and take sunscreen chemistry seriously, since oxybenzone and octinoxate have been linked to coral bleaching while non-nano zinc oxide and non-nano titanium dioxide are the advised alternatives.
Practical notes are few, which suits the object. The box is rigid paperboard with a printed wrap that continues around the side, so it stands on a shelf, a desk or a shop counter without a stand. The doors lift and close back over their compartments, and the pieces sit loose inside, which makes the daily reveal a small hunt rather than a stack of identical boxes.
For a dive buddy, a partner finishing Open Water, or a child who can name every fish on the panel, it works as a small printed log of the water: one piece a day, twenty-four days, with the mask watching the countdown from the middle of the grid.
