Every bird in this box is flat as a bookmark and cut to the outline of the bird it depicts. A cardinal’s crest, a chickadee’s cap, a hummingbird’s needle of a beak: the silhouette carries the identification, and the illustrated plumage is printed inside that line.
Twenty-four of them share one upright rigid box, and the box is half the present. Cream board gives the front a field for the artwork; deep evergreen takes the spine and side panel, so the box reads as a wrapped gift from every angle it will be seen. The printed yard sets the mood rather than inventorying the contents: a snow-dusted birdhouse on its post, a picket fence, village rooftops behind it, and a cardinal, a chickadee and a robin perched in front as if they had just landed. Burgundy 2026 sits above the title the way a year sits on a keepsake, and a wax-seal medallion in the corner carries the Handcrafted Birds Collection name. The lid sits over the box instead of hinging, so the scene runs unbroken from the year down to the greeting along the bottom edge.
The countdown runs without a door
Nothing on that front panel is die-cut. There is no numbered grid, no little window, no compartment hidden behind the artwork; the 2026 is decoration rather than a slot. What the box holds is a supply of twenty-four cutouts, and the December ritual is one of them leaving the box each day through Christmas Eve.
Because the front carries no numbering, nothing printed on the outside promises a particular bird for a particular date. The order lives in the box, not on the box.
The practical difference appears in January. A chocolate calendar is spent once the last door opens; these birds are spent only when someone decides to take them down. Each one arrives dressed for hanging, so the day’s bird goes from box to branch without a trip to the drawer where ribbon lives.

Cardinal, chickadee, blue jay, and the rest of the yard
Twenty-four cutouts, twenty-four different species, none repeated. The cast is the familiar North American one: northern cardinal, blue jay, black-capped chickadee, American robin, American goldfinch, ruby-throated hummingbird, bluebird, mourning dove, downy woodpecker, tufted titmouse, house wren, European starling, house finch, plus an owl, a waxwing, an oriole and several streaked sparrows.
Audubon describes the male northern cardinal as one of the most recognized birds in North America. Black-capped chickadees are permanent residents across the northern United States and parts of the Appalachians, energetic little birds that work mixed, open woods and forest edges instead of deep cover — one reason a suburban feeder draws them at all. Blue jays are corvids, with the close family bonds and complex social systems that come with the family.
Beside a window in February, that is roughly the guest list.

What the clear edge does on a lit tree
Each bird is two-dimensional: a printed panel inside a clear acrylic border that traces the legs, tail and beak. That transparent edge is the tell. Around the printed plumage it reads as a thin outline of the bird’s own shape, and on a lit tree it catches the light along the rim rather than across the face. At the crown of every cutout sits a clear acrylic eyelet with a length of natural jute twine knotted through it — long enough to loop over a fir branch, a hook or a nail.
What happens on December 26
The box has finished its work; the set has not. Twenty-four ornaments is a small tree fully dressed, a garland’s worth of birds lined along a shelf or a mantel, or a solid contribution to a larger tree that already carries a decade of other things. Kept low and close together, the acrylic rims stay visible between the branches rather than disappearing into them.
As a gift it fits the person who keeps a feeder filled and knows what turns up at it, and just as well the household that wants a second, smaller tree in a kitchen or hallway. Nothing in the box needs batteries, water or assembly: the lid comes off, the birds come out, and the count runs on the calendar everyone already keeps.
